What's Happening in Lake Norman & Charlotte: Late September & October 2026
Fresh from September 28. The late-September festivals have wrapped and the October calendar is here: Mecktoberfest at Ballantyne, the Renaissance Festival opening at Rural Hill, Laketoberfest in Cornelius, new restaurants across the lake, and the best pumpkin patches and family fall fun from Huntersville to Kannapolis.
The calendar has turned firmly toward October, and the Lake Norman and Greater Charlotte area is in its best season. The big late-September festivals have wrapped, so weekend plans now point to Mecktoberfest at Ballantyne, the Renaissance Festival opening at Rural Hill, Laketoberfest in Cornelius, and a month of pumpkin patches and family outings across all seven towns. Whether you live here or you are scouting the region for a move, this is the stretch of the year that sells the place on its own.
I am Tiffany Huntoon, a REALTOR and Production Partner on The Lauren Rocco Team at eXp Realty. North Carolina born and raised, I am a veteran of both the Army and Air Force, I spent years in corporate tech sales, and I came home to help families find their own slice of this region. I serve buyers and sellers across Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte, Concord, and Kannapolis, and I keep these guides updated so you always know what is worth your weekend. Here is what is happening right now, and what to circle before it fills up.
What Just Wrapped & What's Next
A quick reset so you are planning around what is actually still ahead: the Kannapolis Farmers Market wrapped its season finale on September 24, Breakaway Music Festival and Oktoberfest at Cabarrus Brewing closed out the weekend of September 25-27, Festival in the Park in Charlotte and the Charlotte Film Festival both ended September 27, and the fall edition of 'Tawba Walk in Cornelius was September 26. All of those have come and gone, so the calendar from here belongs to October: Mecktoberfest, the Renaissance Festival, Laketoberfest, and a month of farm and family fun.
A note on dates: Event dates and times are published by each town and venue and can shift, so it is always worth confirming with the organizer before you head out.
This Week: September 28 - October 4
A gentle close to September and a big opening to October: a free orchestra concert in Mooresville, Mecktoberfest moving to Ballantyne, the Renaissance Festival opening at Rural Hill, and a family-friendly festival in University City. Here is what to circle.
Mecktoberfest at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery
Charlotte's favorite German-style celebration moves to the Ballantyne taproom for the first two weekends of October. Seasonal brews, brats, live oompah bands, and stein-holding contests, all an easy drive from the lake.
Lake Norman Philharmonic: Free Community Concert
The Lake Norman Philharmonic opens its season with a free community concert under the open sky at Liberty Park. Pack a blanket, bring the family, and let the orchestra do the rest. A lovely, low-key way to open October.
Charlotte Kids Fest
A free, hands-on festival built for little ones, with activities, a sensory-friendly area, and family fun in University City. A great first stop for families with young kids before the weekend's bigger festivals.
Concord International Festival
A free celebration of global music, arts, and food cultures in the heart of downtown Concord. A wonderful way to show the whole family how internationally connected this region has become.
Downtown Mooresville Festival of Food Trucks
Fifteen-plus food trucks, live music, and Mooresville's social district all along the downtown streets. Pair it with a drink at Deepwell and you have a perfect fall Saturday night.
Carolina Renaissance Festival Opening Weekend
The Southeast's premier Renaissance festival opens this weekend with jousting, artisan crafts, turkey legs, and kid-approved entertainment, and it runs every weekend into late November. Buy tickets online in advance, especially for Saturdays.
Disney On Ice: Spotlight Magic
A family favorite returns to Charlotte with beloved characters on the ice. A classic first-live-show outing for young kids and a fun indoor pick as the weather turns.
Fresh Dining & Community News: What Just Landed & What's Next
The dining scene has not slowed down all year, and the newest news is a mix of just-opened favorites and what is coming next across North Meck and Cabarrus. Here is where to point the car right now.
Little Mama's Italian
Cornelius, Bailey RoadCharlotte's Michelin-recommended Italian favorite is now open on the lake. Little Mama's landed at 9623 Bailey Road in Cornelius on September 7, in the former GOAT Pizza space, with scratch-made pasta, brick-oven pizza, and tableside mozzarella across 140 seats. It is the opening to put on your list if you have not been yet, and it is already a reservation-worthy spot.
Rio 150 Mexican Restaurant
HuntersvilleA new Mexican concept is coming to Huntersville in the former La Victoria Cocina Mexicana & Bar space near Exit 25. Watch for the opening date if you like a family-friendly sit-down spot on the north side of the lake.
Chili Willi's Tex-Mex
Cornelius, waterfrontThe popular Charlotte-area Tex-Mex brand is taking over the former Waterman's waterfront space in Cornelius, which would put lakefront dining back on the map on that side of the water. A welcome return of dock-adjacent eats to the area.
Deepwell & The Guest House by Choplin's
Mooresville & HuntersvilleTwo of the season's biggest openings are settling into their rhythm. Deepwell at Broad and Main in downtown Mooresville, from the team behind Davidson's celebrated Kindred with chef Craig Deihl in the kitchen, keeps drawing crowds for New Orleans-inspired cooking and cocktails. The Guest House by Choplin's serves steaks and small plates in a restored Victorian-style home on Gilead Road in Huntersville. Book ahead at both.
The Union Sky Rooftop
Downtown ConcordConcord's first rooftop restaurant and cocktail lounge is slated to open this fall on the seventh floor of NOVI Lofts at 26 Union Street South. It was the announcement everyone talked about in August, and downtown Concord has not had anything like it. Watch for the date and get a reservation early.
The District Exchange & The Bank Food Hall
Concord & KannapolisThe two renovated downtown hubs keep building momentum. The District Exchange in downtown Concord packs 17 micro-retail units and two food anchors into a landmark building that sat unused since 1977, with Bae's Burgers, Crane Coffee Co., and more. The Bank Food Hall fills the historic 1931 Cabarrus Bank Building in downtown Kannapolis with locally owned vendors and a bar set against the old bank vaults. Two renovated downtowns worth a day trip.
Local's tip from Tiffany: Make it a Cabarrus day trip. Start at The District Exchange in downtown Concord for coffee and a Bae's burger, walk Union Street past the galleries, then finish with dinner at The Bank Food Hall in Kannapolis and a stroll through the West Avenue social district. Two renovated downtowns in one afternoon, and it shows you exactly why families are planting roots in this corner of the metro. When Sadler Square finishes in Davidson, add that walkable block to the rotation too.

October Headliners: What to Circle Now
October starts with a bang across all seven towns: the Renaissance Festival opens in Huntersville, festivals land in Concord, Mooresville, and Kannapolis the same weekend, and the speedway hosts its biggest race weekend of the fall. This is the list I would print and put on the fridge.
Carolina Renaissance Festival
The Southeast's premier Renaissance festival runs every weekend into late November, with themed weekends like Wizards & Revels on October 17. Jousting, artisan crafts, turkey legs, and kid-approved entertainment. Buy tickets online in advance, especially for Saturdays.
Laketoberfest
A free, family-friendly fall festival in Cornelius with live music, North Carolina beer and wine, food trucks, and a kids' zone. A signature event in the lake towns and one to circle now.
NASCAR Playoff Weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway
The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs bring a big race weekend to the speedway in Concord. Even if you are not at the track, the whole area buzzes with race-weekend energy, dining, and events.
Mooresville Motorsports Celebration
Days before the speedway's playoff weekend, Mooresville celebrates its status as Race City USA with a community motorsports celebration. Check the city's events page for the full lineup, and book a dinner table downtown while the race crowd is in town.
Charlotte Knights Pumpkin Palooza
The Knights' annual family favorite returns to the ballpark: free entry, pumpkin picking in the outfield, a decorating station, and live music. A uniquely Charlotte way to kick off the pumpkin season.
Lake Norman Diwali
The annual Diwali celebration returns to Veterans Park at Main and Maxwell with lights, music, food, and family festivities. A lovely evening that showcases the region's cultural calendar in a big way.
Charlotte Chalk Art Festival
Chalk artists turn the brewery grounds into a burst of color, with food trucks and live music around it. A free, low-key weekend outing in one of Charlotte's most creative neighborhoods.
Foxtoberfest
The speedway complex's free fall car show and community tailgate on the front stretch. Rows of classic rides, vendors, and a good excuse for a Concord afternoon before the holiday season begins.
Christmas Made in the South
One of the region's premier holiday craft shows arrives before Halloween with hundreds of American artisans. A head start on festive shopping and a great indoor pick if the weather turns.
Big Concerts & Live Music
October is stacked with live music: Kacey Musgraves at Spectrum Center on October 2, Olivia Rodrigo with Wolf Alice on October 8, Ed Sheeran at Bank of America Stadium on October 16, and TLC & Salt-N-Pepa with En Vogue at the Toyota Pavilion in Concord on October 11. Something for every taste, all an easy drive from the lake.
For the dedicated deep dive on the month, including more on the race weekend and the full lineup, see our October 2026 guide.
Pumpkin Patches, Corn Mazes & Farm Fun
Nothing says fall in the Piedmont like a Saturday at a farm. Here are the patches and mazes the locals actually go to, from Huntersville to Concord, including a pick-your-own favorite that opens October 3.
Rural Hill Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch
The celebrated Amazing Maize Maze, pumpkin patch, hayrides, and Highland cows at one of the region's most beautiful historic properties. In October the maze stays open after dark on Friday and Saturday nights, which the kids never forget. Bring a flashlight.
Carrigan Farms
Pumpkin picking returns October 3 at this Mooresville favorite: a hayride out to the patch where you pick your pumpkin right off the vine, plus a petting zoo, apple cider, and donuts. Reservations are required, so book ahead. It has hosted generations of Lake Norman families.
Patterson Farm
Fall Fun on the Farm runs into late November with a corn maze, pumpkin patch, hayrides, cow train rides, and more than 40 attractions. A short drive from the lake and worth a full afternoon.
Hodges Family Farm
A family-run Charlotte farm with a pumpkin patch, hay bales, barnyard animals, and picnic areas. Free admission, with a small weekend parking fee and hayrides, making it an easy, budget-friendly fall outing.
Almond Farm Fall Festival
A working farm in Concord with a pumpkin patch, corn maze, hayrides, and farm animals, open most days through the end of October. An easy, classic fall afternoon for Cabarrus County families.
Outdoor & Family-Friendly: Now Through October
The weather has turned toward the best of the year, and the outdoor scene shifts from the water to the trails, the fields, and the festival lawns. Here is how to spend the next several weekends with the people you love.
U.S. National Whitewater Center
Whitewater rafting, kayaking, zip lines, and mountain biking, plus free evening concerts in the River Jam series. Cooler fall days make the trails and courses even better, and the color along the Catawba is a bonus.
Latta Nature Preserve
1,460 acres with 16+ miles of hiking trails, the Carolina Raptor Center, an aquarium, and lake access. As the leaves turn, the trails pick up the first hints of color, and the bird-of-prey flights at the Raptor Center are a highlight for kids and adults alike.
Lake Norman State Park
The swimming beach winds down as the water cools, but the 30+ miles of hiking and mountain biking trails are entering their best season. Autumn is spectacular here, and weekday visits are blissfully quiet.
Friday Night Lights
As a mom of two high school soccer players, this is my favorite time on the sidelines. Fall in the Lake Norman towns means Friday-night football, weekend soccer on green fields, and the community that turns out for it all. A wonderful way to feel at home fast.

Why October Matters for Homebuyers
As a REALTOR, I love this stretch of the year because it is when relocating families turn summer curiosity into real decisions. They spend the warm months touring the towns, eating at the new restaurants, walking the greenways, and picturing Friday nights on a festival lawn. Then the school year starts, the community rallies around a home game or a harvest festival, and the pull to put down roots gets strong.
The momentum in Concord, Kannapolis, and Davidson especially is something to see firsthand. A town's new restaurants, food halls, social districts, and gathering places are the strongest signal of a community that is growing in the right way. That is part of what I look at with every buyer: not just the house, but the life around it.
Whether you are a growing family looking at the right school district in Huntersville or Cornelius, a military family relocating to the region, a first-time buyer exploring Concord or Kannapolis, or someone ready to downsize to the lake, I bring the same strategic approach I used in military intelligence and corporate sales to every client, combined with real local knowledge and warm, down-to-earth care.
If you are even beginning to think about a move, now is a great time to start the conversation. Let us talk about what you are looking for, or explore our community guides and our latest market report to see what is happening in your target town.
