September 2026: Your Complete Lake Norman & Charlotte Guide
The school year is underway, the weather is easing, and the fall festival season is in full swing. Here is what is happening right now across Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte, Concord, and Kannapolis, plus the new restaurants worth getting on your radar.
We are deep into September now, and this is one of the most quietly magical stretches of the year around Lake Norman. The heat of August has loosened its grip, the evenings settle in just a little earlier, and the fall festival calendar is fully underway. Labor Day kicked off the month in style, the families have settled into their school routines, and the lake gets a little more peaceful on weekdays while staying buzzy on weekends. The long-awaited Lake Norman opening of Little Mama's happened on September 7, Deepwell arrived in downtown Mooresville on September 16, so this updated guide points you to what is worth your time from here through the end of the month and into the first weekend of October.

September at a Glance: Festivals, Fall Traditions & Live Music
September is when the region really comes into its own, and the biggest holiday weekend of the year has just wrapped up in fine style. The momentum carries straight through the rest of the month into October. Here is what is still ahead on the calendar.
A note on dates: Event dates and times are published by each town and venue and can shift, so it is always worth confirming with the organizer before you head out.
Mecktoberfest at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery
Charlotte's favorite German-style celebration with seasonal beer, food, live bands, and stein-holding contests. The LoSo weekends wrapped in September, and the celebration continues at the Ballantyne taproom for the first two weekends of October. A fun family outing on the brewery grounds and a great way to welcome fall.
Concord International Festival
A celebration of global music, arts, and food cultures in the heart of downtown Concord, fresh on the calendar this year. A wonderful way to show the whole family how internationally connected this region has become, and a great reason to spend a Saturday in Concord's historic district.
Breakaway Music Festival
Breakaway Carolina brings a big-ticket music festival weekend to the dragway with national headliners, food vendors, and a high-energy atmosphere. It is an 18+ event, so plan the date night or the group weekend accordingly.
'Tawba Walk Arts & Music Festival
The fall edition of Cornelius's signature festival returns to Old Town with more than 100 local artists, food trucks, and live music in the open air. Free, family-friendly, and one of the loveliest ways to spend a late-September afternoon in the lake towns.
Charlotte Film Festival
Charlotte's premier film festival featuring independent films, documentaries, and shorts from around the world. Screenings, filmmaker Q&As, and industry panels in the NoDa arts district. A wonderful cultural addition to the fall calendar.
62nd Annual Festival in the Park
One of Charlotte's oldest and most beloved traditions returns to Freedom Park. Fine arts and crafts, live music on multiple stages, food vendors, and a kids' activity zone under the canopy of mature trees. A picture-perfect late-September weekend in the city.
Oktoberfest at Cabarrus Brewing Co.
A weekend-long Oktoberfest celebration in Concord with seasonal beer, German-inspired food, live music, and a festive community atmosphere. A great way to welcome the fall season in Cabarrus County.
Local's tip from Tiffany: With fall officially here, the marquee moment right now is the opening of Deepwell at Broad and Main in downtown Mooresville, which happened on September 16 and is worth a visit in these first weeks. From here, circle Festival in the Park at Freedom Park on September 25-27, 'Tawba Walk in Cornelius on September 26, and Mecktoberfest at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery's Ballantyne taproom October 2-4 and 9-11. The nights are cool, the corn mazes are open, and it is the perfect send-off for lake season while welcoming in fall.
New Restaurants to Try This September
The Lake Norman dining scene has never been stronger. The Charlotte Observer recently reported that at least 21 new restaurants have opened across the Lake Norman towns in the past year and a half, and September brings one of the most anticipated openings of the season. Here is where to eat right now.
My personal picks: If you only try one new spot this month, make it Deepwell in downtown Mooresville, the new neighborhood restaurant from the Kindreds that just opened on September 16. For a special date night, The Guest House by Choplin's in Huntersville is the finest new room on the lake. And for something quick after the farmers market, Harriet's Hamburgers in Davidson is worth the detour.
Deepwell
MooresvilleThe most anticipated opening of the season became real on September 16: Deepwell is now open at Broad and Main in downtown Mooresville, from Joe and Katy Kindred, the team behind the celebrated Kindred restaurant in Davidson, with chef Craig Deihl in the kitchen. New Orleans-inspired cooking and cocktails in the heart of downtown, so book ahead.
The Guest House by Choplin's
HuntersvilleThe fine-dining shine of the season. A steakhouse from the team behind Choplin's Restaurant, open in a beautifully restored Victorian-style home on Gilead Road in Huntersville. Steaks, small plates, and martinis in a one-of-a-kind setting. The setting alone is worth the visit.
Ilios Crafted Greek
DavidsonOpened July 20 on Griffith Street in Davidson, this is the fifth location for the popular Charlotte-area Greek chain. Fresh, authentic Greek food including gyros, souvlaki, spanakopita, and their famous tzatziki, just a short walk from downtown Davidson.
Harriet's Hamburgers
DavidsonOpened July 3 in Davidson. Smashed-to-order burgers, old-fashioned milkshakes, and a retro, welcoming vibe. Locals have quickly crowned it one of the best burger spots in town, and the picnic tables make it a perfect post-farmers-market lunch stop on Saturdays.
Chili Willi's Tex Mex Grill
CorneliusOpened May 8 at 9615 Bailey Road in Cornelius, in the former Waterman's waterfront space. Tex-Mex favorites, margaritas, tacos, and a lively outdoor patio that makes the most of those early-fall evenings.
Little Mama's Italian
CorneliusCharlotte's Michelin-recommended Italian-American spot opened its Lake Norman location on Monday, September 7, on Bailey Road in Cornelius in the former GOAT Pizza space. Expect brick-oven pizzas, house-made pastas, and the same warm, unpretentious atmosphere that made the original a city favorite. Go early in these first weeks, the whole lake is excited about this one.
FunkHeizer's Diner
Mooresville & HuntersvilleThis diner concept by Mel Funk features all-day breakfast, smash burgers, a full bar, and a genuinely warm atmosphere. The first location opened in Mooresville, with Huntersville following, and it has been packed since day one. The biscuits and gravy alone are worth the trip.
Bae's Burgers
ConcordThe well-known Mooresville burger favorite expanded to downtown Concord this August as an anchor tenant at the new District Exchange marketplace on Union Street. A sign of how much momentum Concord's historic district is building right now.

Fall Traditions Are Beginning
September is when the things people relocating to Lake Norman fall in love with, the corn mazes, the harvest markets, the weekend festivals, all start to fire up. If you are new to the area, this is the season that shows you how special this place is.
Rural Hill Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch
A beloved Huntersville family tradition. Navigate the corn maze, pick pumpkins from the patch, enjoy hayrides, and visit the farm animals. It kicks off the fall season in the best possible way and is one of the first true fall experiences of the year.
Carolina Renaissance Festival
The Carolinas' premier Renaissance-themed festival returns to Huntersville for weekends of jousting tournaments, artisan crafts, turkey legs, and family entertainment. It draws visitors from across the Southeast. Buy tickets online in advance, especially for weekends.
North Meck Farmers Markets
The North Meck Community Market (mornings) and the afternoon community market keep peak-season produce and artisan goods flowing through the end of September. September harvests of apples, squash, and late tomatoes are some of the best of the year.
Davidson Farmers Market
A reliable weekly tradition that runs all year. In September you get peak harvest produce, artisan foods, and live music right in the heart of Davidson on the Village Green.
Kannapolis Farmers Market
Runs Thursday afternoons through the end of September with local produce, honey, eggs, baked goods, prepared foods, and crafts. The last weeks of the season are worth grabbing, and the Thursday evening timing makes it an easy stop after work.
Outdoor Adventures: September Edition
September is one of the best months of the year to be outside in the Lake Norman area. The water is still warm enough to enjoy, the hiking trails are pleasant well into the day, and the falling temperatures make long walks and lake afternoons genuinely comfortable. Here is where to get out there.
Ramsey Creek Park
A lakeside gem with a sandy swimming beach (lifeguarded through Labor Day), a hiking trail, a kayak launch, and plenty of green space. Less crowded than the state park on weekends and just as beautiful. My top pick for a late-summer afternoon with the family.
Lake Norman State Park
The swimming beach, kayak rentals, and 30+ miles of hiking and mountain biking trails are all still going strong. By September the crowds thin out, making weekday visits especially peaceful. Arrive before 10 a.m. on weekends for the best parking.
U.S. National Whitewater Center
Whitewater rafting, kayaking, zip lines, mountain biking, and the free River Jam concert series on Thursday through Saturday evenings. September's cooler days make the trails and adventure courses even more enjoyable. The Labor Day weekend celebration is a highlight.
Village Park
A crown jewel of Cabarrus County. The splash pad runs through Labor Day, the beautifully restored 1908 carousel and Rotary Express train delight kids year-round, and the walking trails around the pond are perfect for an evening stroll.
Latta Nature Preserve
1,460 acres of natural beauty with 16+ miles of hiking trails, the Carolina Raptor Center, an aquarium, and lake access. As the weather cools in September, the hiking here becomes truly spectacular with the first hints of changing leaves.

What Is New in Concord and Kannapolis
The communities east of the lake continue to be two of the most exciting places to watch in the entire Charlotte metro. Downtown Concord's revitalization keeps building momentum. This August, the new District Exchange marketplace opened on Union Street with more than a dozen food and retail tenants, anchored by the expanded Bae's Burgers. It is a wonderful reason to spend an afternoon exploring the historic district, then grab a table downtown for dinner.
In Kannapolis, Village Park remains the crown jewel, with its restored 1908 carousel, Rotary Express train, splash pad through Labor Day, and walking trails around the pond. The Bank Food Hall has joined the downtown dining scene inside the historic 1931 Cabarrus Bank building on West Avenue, adding to a district that has seen dozens of new businesses open as part of the city's long-running downtown revitalization. The Kannapolis Farmers Market also runs Thursday afternoons on Vance Avenue through the end of September, a great way to taste what Cabarrus County grows.
For families considering a move, home prices in Cabarrus County remain more accessible than many Lake Norman waterfront communities, and the schools have seen meaningful investment. It is a story worth a Saturday to see for yourself.
Why September Is Such a Telling Time for Homebuyers
As a REALTOR, I love this time of year because it is when so many families turn their summer explorations into real decisions. They have spent the warm months visiting the towns, eating at the restaurants, walking the greenways, and picturing what life would look like here. Then September arrives, the school year starts, and they feel that pull to put down roots before the holiday season.

If you are even beginning to think about a move, there is no better time than now to start the conversation. Let us talk about what you are looking for. I would love to help you find your place in this beautiful region.
